Chief Vickers began his law enforcement career with the Abilene Police Department in 1979 and continued to serve until his retirement in 2006. During his 27 years with the Abilene Police Department he served in a wide variety of capacities; his positions there included specialties such as oversight of the training division and selection process, Patrol Division supervision and command, School Resource Officer, and Public Information Officer. He was Commander of the APD Critical Missing Response Team, which gained nationwide attention when it handled and quickly solved the first Amber Alert stranger kidnapping case in Texas. Chief Vickers is nationally recognized as an expert instructor and consultant in the area of Family Violence, and is currently an officer of the Board of Directors of the National Domestic Violence Hotline.
The director began his career as an Abilene training officer in 1979, and moved up the ranks of that police department until his 2006 retirement as commander of the Critical Missing Response team.
