B.A. Yale University; J.D. Southern Methodist University School of Law, 1974. Attorney with firm of Locke, Purnell, Boren, Laney and Neely, 1976-81. District Judge, 95th Judicial District, 1981-86. Justice, Fifth District Court of Appeals, 1986-1988. Gov. Rick Perry appointed him Chief Justice in September 2013, succeeding Wallace B. Jefferson, and he began as Chief Justice October 1, 2013. In 2014 he will become the longest-serving Supreme Court member in Texas history.
