Personal Information

Marisa B. Perez, the District 3 State Board of Education member, was born and raised in San Antonio. She is a product of the public school system and now works as a governmental and community relations specialist for the district from which she proudly graduated, the San Antonio Independent School District.

Perez, a Democrat, was elected to the State Board of Education in November 2012 and took office on Jan. 1, 2013.

Perez graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology and a minor in psychology. Upon graduation, Perez’s passion for child advocacy and public service manifested itself in her tenure with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.

Committed to her profession, Perez has been trained and certified in numerous topics ranging from: child development, advanced risk assessment and communicating in high stakes environments to planning diversity initiatives, changing corporate culture and community engagement. Her years with the department and interaction with children, families and the community that serves them has allowed her to obtain a unique perspective of education, the importance it plays in children and the need to strengthen it.

The arts have been an important focus of her life. Perez has been a student of Ballet Folklorico and Flamenco for more than two decades. She has been an active member of the professional company, The Guadalupe Dance Company. Perez believes that a strong cultural, philanthropic and educational foundation have been key to her personal and professional development.

Perez is an active member of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials.

As the District 3 board member, Perez represents the citizens in the following counties: Bee, Brooks, Duval, Gonzales, Jim Hogg, Jim Wells, Karnes, Lavaca, Live Oak, McMullen, Starr, Wilson and parts of Bexar and Hidalgo counties.
