Mixon is a member of the State Bar of Texas, American Bar Association, Bar Association of the First Judicial District of Texas, Jasper County Bar Association, and Texas Pro-Bono College. He is also a member of the Buna Chamber of Commerce and an honorary member of the East Texas Mutual Aid Association.

Mixson received a bachelor's degree from Lamar University and a law degree from Texas Wesleyan University.
